About Marram

Marram is a brick and flint granary on the edge of Overy Marsh, built in 1821 to store barley for the boats. We kept the beams, the long windows and the quiet, and added twelve rooms, a kitchen and a fire that is lit from October to April.

Welcome in four rooms
A still creek winding through green salt marsh under a clear sky. Marram grass on a sand dune, the beach and a strip of blue sea beyond. Tall dry reeds in the foreground and pale water under a wide grey sky. A wide salt marsh of pools and grass stretching to a low horizon.

Dinner, four nights a week

Thursday to Sunday, our cook Hattie Lowe sets one five-course menu from what the boats, the marsh and three farms within twelve miles bring in that morning. £68, and residents always have a table.

A wicker basket with a baguette, lemons, a book and a sprig of yellow mimosa.

Breakfast is served until ten in the long room, and on fine mornings we'll pack it in a basket for the walk to the beach.

Three walks from the door

  1. Marram grass bending over a sand dune at Gun Hill.

    2.4 miles

To Gun Hill and the beach

Along the sea wall to the dunes at Gun Hill and the long sands beyond. Go two hours either side of low tide and you can walk to Scolt Head's eastern tip.

  2. A weathered wooden fence along grassy dunes.

    5 miles

    Through Holkham Pines

West along the coast path into the Corsican pines, out onto Holkham Bay, and back for a late lunch. Pink-footed geese arrive overhead from October.

  3. An egret wading the shallows on a pale tidal flat.

    By boat

    To Scolt Head Island

Between May and September a ferry runs from the staithe when the tide allows. Terns nest at the western end; the warden will tell you where not to walk.
